Choosing a planetary roller screw

Planetary roller screws transmit motion through threaded rollers between the screw and nut. Different arrangements serve different operating requirements. RV is a non-circulating design, while RVD uses a differential arrangement for fine travel per revolution. STR has a separate set of published model tables. The examples below are starting points for reviewing the individual product pages.

Representative published models — nominal diameter / lead in mm
Product seriesConfiguration and selectionPublished model examples
RV Planetary Roller Screw Non-circulating planetary design. Review diameter, lead, load ratings, stiffness, axial clearance and efficiency fields alongside the nut configuration. RV 3.5 × 1: Ø3.5 mm / 1 mm lead; RV 7 × 1: Ø7 mm / 1 mm lead; RV 10 × 1: Ø10 mm / 1 mm lead.
RVD Differential Planetary Roller Screw Differential design for fine travel per revolution. Review the required stroke, stiffness, load ratings, screw diameters and nut envelope together. RVD 12 × 0.05: Ø12 mm / 0.05 mm lead; RVD 15 × 0.10: Ø15 mm / 0.10 mm lead; RVD 18 × 0.25: Ø18 mm / 0.25 mm lead.
STR SERIES STR has its own published model tables. Review the nominal diameter, lead and installation dimensions against the required assembly drawing. STR0802: Ø8 mm / 2 mm lead; STR0804: Ø8 mm / 4 mm lead; STR1505: Ø15 mm / 5 mm lead.

Review load, stiffness and interfaces

Use the individual model's dynamic and static axial load ratings, stiffness and dimensions. Check the units shown in each table and compare the screw, nut and connection geometry with your assembly drawing. Nominal diameter alone does not establish that two configurations are interchangeable.

Confirm the complete motion requirement

Specify stroke, speed, operating cycle and the required positioning performance. For differential RVD selection, confirm the usable stroke as well as the fine lead. Include preload or clearance requirements, lubrication and the operating environment so the configuration can be reviewed against the application.

Prepare your product inquiry

Include these details so the model and installation requirements can be reviewed together.

  • Running and peak axial loads, working stroke and required travel speed.
  • Operating cycle, positioning requirements, preload or permitted axial clearance.
  • Available installation space, nut interfaces, shaft ends and assembly drawing.
  • Lubrication, operating environment and required quantity.
