Difference Between Ball Screw and Ball Spline

Roller screws and ball splines are both mechanical transmission components, and they have several main differences:
1、Structural form: Roller screws are composed of threads and rollers, and the fitting between the threads and rollers can convert rotary motion into linear motion. Ball splines are composed of splines and balls, and the fitting between the splines and balls can also convert rotary motion into linear motion.
2、Accuracy: Due to the high fitting accuracy between the threads and rollers in roller screws, their motion accuracy is relatively high. However, the fitting accuracy between splines and balls in ball splines is relatively low, so their motion accuracy is relatively low.
3、Load capacity: The fitting between the rollers and threads in roller screws can bear a relatively large load, so their load capacity is relatively high. However, the fitting capacity between balls and splines in ball splines is relatively low, so their load capacity is relatively low.
4、Lifespan: Due to their high fitting accuracy, low friction, and less wear, roller screws have a relatively long lifespan. On the other hand, ball splines have a relatively short lifespan due to their lower fitting accuracy, higher friction, and more wear.
5、Price: The manufacturing process and material cost of roller screws are relatively high, making their price relatively high. Conversely, the manufacturing process and material cost of ball splines are relatively low, making their price relatively low.
Roller screws and ball splines have differences in structural form, accuracy, load capacity, lifespan, and price. The choice should be made based on specific application requirements and budget. If high accuracy and load capacity are required, and the budget is sufficient, roller screws can be chosen. On the other hand, if the budget is limited, ball splines can be chosen.
